Welcome to the Conference!

Monday was quite the day at COP as everyone was geared up for a busy two weeks. The goal of this conference is to complete a handbook for the Paris Agreement that ensures accountability and transparency in how countries meet their commitments and increase the ambition of countries to do more. In essence, the rubber is hitting the road this year and they are trying to figure out how to steer this in the right direction before the agreement comes into full effect in 2020. This is quite a task to complete in two weeks but a lot of countries are willing to put in the work to get this done.

This is a major UN conference that includes powerhouses like the Russian Federation, India, China, and Great Britain as well as developing countries such as Fiji, Zambia, and Uruguay. It is amazing to see representatives from all of these countries presenting their plans and goals in the Country Pavilions and having discussions in the conference areas. One thing that surprised me was how nice and casual everyone was, even with official observers like us. Walking down the hallways you could easily find delegates from Great Britain chatting with delegates from South Africa, Zambia, and Uruguay and at the same time run into someone from Thailand and start a conversation with a simple ‘hello’. In all, this conference has already blown me away and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Our delegation will be sharing our experiences here, but I encourage you to look up this conference up yourself, follow it on social media, and learn about some things that interest you! Be ready for an action packed two weeks!
